Edinburgh Social Enterprise workshop
Taste of Lean case study
Edinburgh Social Enterprise Network (ESEN) enables social change by creating connections and collaboration. The team of four used their workshop to identify what gets in the way of them delivering value, and then came up with actions they could take to remove the barriers.
The team first enthusiastically identified the significant value they provide to each of their stakeholder groups. Understanding your purpose and the value you give is a key starting point for any Lean activity. They then learned about Lean wastes and identified examples of waste in their own work.
Team members voted to prioritise the problems and we were able to address the top two opportunities during the rest of the workshop:
- to reduce repetition of discussion and effort
- to increase visibility of task logging and completion.
For each challenge we next considered a way to measure success and set targets for improvement.
We then explored root causes together using the 5 Whys tool and then the team identified actions they could take to help achieve their goals. We assigned owners for the ideas they selected to test out. After the workshop I documented everything they had achieved.
Root causes discovered using 5 Whys (obfuscated for privacy).
“Jean made the whole concept of Lean accessible, straightforward and enjoyable. Thank you.” Claire Pattullo, CEO.
“We blame lack of capacity for not doing things, but we have the capacity – it is just hiding.” Team member.
